Since 1992 Bittersweet, a bakery/pastry shop/cafe located in Central Lake View, has been baking its own eclectic selection of pastries, cookies, wedding and layered cakes, tarts, and breakfast breads such as scones, muffins pecan rolls and almond coffee cake. The word got around quickly, and Bittersweet and its tasty pastries have been recognized as Chicago's best by Chicago Magazine (December, 1995) and New City (1995). Owner Judy Contino was chosen as the Woman Pastry Chef of the Year in 1992 by the Women's Food Service Network, and as one of the Top 10 women cooks by New Woman Magazine (1996). Bittersweet serves a lunch menu featuring different soups, sandwiches, quiche and individual desserts each day. People from all over the city and suburbs, and as far away as Florida, make special trips to Bittersweet because the cafe is a cozy place where one can enjoy simple but extremely tasty sweets. One thing that is great about Bittersweet is that you can come in just to have dessert. The pastry shop, which specializes in cakes for weddings, celebrations, and holidays, makes some of the best sweets in the city. Also, the close proximity to the Belmont el on the red line makes Bittersweet even more convenient. Tuesday - Fridays: 7am - 7pm Saturdays: 8am - 7pm Sundays: 8am - 6pm
